Born in Bologna (Italy) in 1962, Gabriele Fioni is a Nuclear Physicist, Doctor of Science of the Ghent University (Belgium) and Doctor in Physics of the Bologna University (Italy).

Since March 2010, he is Scientific Director and Deputy Director General for Research and Innovation at the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research, after having been appointed in 2008 as Director of the sector “Energy, Sustainable Development, Chemistry and Process Engineering”.

In 2005, he was appointed as Deputy Director of the Physical Science Division at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in Paris. He was in charge of Large Scale Facilities and of nuclear and particle physics activities.

In 2003-2004, he was Deputy to the Strategy Director of the CEA, in charge of the definition of the mid and long-term strategic plan.

In 2001-2002, he served as Nuclear Energy Project Officer at the French Ministry of Research, where in particular he was coordinating the national researches on nuclear waste management, and representing the ministry in several committees and decision making boards.
